You bought a FlexVolt® pack for a saw, and now it is the biggest battery in your truck box. The natural question: will that 60V brick run a train horn built for DeWalt® 20V MAX™ batteries, or will 60 volts fry it? Here is the straight answer, plus what the pack actually does the moment it clicks onto a horn.

The Short Answer

Yes. A DeWalt® FlexVolt® battery runs any train horn built for the 20V MAX™ battery mount, with no adapter and no risk of over-voltage. The pack senses a 20V MAX tool interface when it seats and configures itself as a 20V battery. The horn never sees 60 volts. What you gain is runtime: a FlexVolt pack delivers its full 20V amp-hour rating on the horn, so the 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah, and 15Ah models behave like very large 20V MAX packs. What you do not gain is loudness. The horn sounds exactly as loud on a 6Ah FlexVolt pack as it does on a 2Ah compact pack.

How a FlexVolt Battery Decides Between 20V and 60V

DeWalt launched FlexVolt in June 2016 as the first cordless tool battery that automatically changes voltage when you change tools. The trick is in the wiring. A standard FlexVolt pack holds 15 lithium-ion cells. On a 20V MAX tool, those cells run as three groups of five in parallel, which gives you 20V MAX at the pack's full amp-hour rating. On a 60V MAX tool, all 15 cells are switched into a single series string, tripling the voltage and cutting the amp-hour figure to one-third.

DeWalt's own fine print settles a lot of forum arguments: maximum initial battery voltage, measured without a workload, is 20, 60, and 120 volts, and nominal voltage is 18, 54, and 108. So a FlexVolt pack on a 20V tool is an 18V-nominal battery, exactly like every other pack in the family.

Why the Horn Only Ever Sees 20V

The voltage selection happens at the physical connection, not in a menu or a switch you could set wrong. A 20V MAX tool interface only engages the pack's parallel path, while a 60V MAX tool's terminal layout engages the series path. Sliding the pack on is what picks the mode. A battery train horn is built around a standard 20V MAX battery mount, so it engages the parallel path every time. There is no 60V contact on the horn for the pack to talk to, which is why the over-voltage worry is a non-issue.

Since 2021, DeWalt has sold a line of 20V MAX tools marketed as FlexVolt Advantage. Those tools have electronics that recognize a FlexVolt pack and pull more current from it, with claims of up to 77% more power on a circular saw. That boost comes from the tool's electronics, not from the battery putting out more voltage. A train horn has no FlexVolt-sensing circuitry. It draws what its compressor motor needs at 18V nominal, and it draws the same amount from a FlexVolt pack as from any other 20V MAX pack.

Does the Bigger Pack Make the Horn Louder?

No, and it is worth being blunt, because it is the most common reason people reach for the FlexVolt in the first place. Loudness on a battery train horn is set by the compressor and the trumpets, and the compressor's output depends on voltage. Since every 20V MAX-family pack delivers the same nominal 18V, a 15Ah FlexVolt pack and a 2Ah compact pack push the compressor to the same pressure and the trumpets to the same decibel level. What capacity buys you is time between charges. Rough math: if a horn pulls around 10 amps while it is sounding, a 6Ah pack holds enough for roughly 36 minutes of continuous noise, and a 15Ah pack for roughly 90 minutes. Since a normal blast lasts one or two seconds, either number works out to many hundreds of blasts on a single charge. In practice, a FlexVolt pack on a mounted horn gets charged at the start of the season and forgotten.

Weight and Balance: The Real Trade-Off

The FlexVolt drawback on a horn is not electrical. It is mass. The 6Ah DCB606 is listed at about 2.55 pounds and stands about 7 inches tall. The 12Ah DCB612 is about 3.2 pounds, and the 15Ah DCB615, which uses 30 cells instead of 15, comes in at about 4.5 pounds. So the practical rule is simple:

  • Handheld use (walking the dock, tailgating, trail rides): run a compact 20V MAX pack or a PowerStack pack. Lighter, better balance, still hundreds of blasts.
  • Mounted use (truck bed box, UTV rack, boat console, tractor cab): put the FlexVolt on it. The weight is irrelevant once the horn is strapped down, and the runtime is enormous.

The Reverse Question: Can a 20V Pack Run 60V Tools?

Compatibility on the FlexVolt platform flows one direction. FlexVolt packs run 20V MAX tools and chargers, but a standard 20V MAX or PowerStack pack cannot produce the 54V-nominal series output that 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools require. That does not affect the horn, but it matters for your tool budget: a FlexVolt bought for the horn also runs the big saws, while a compact pack does not go the other way.

It also puts FlexVolt in a rare category. On most brands, a higher-voltage line is a completely separate platform with its own mount and no backward compatibility, which is why a horn cannot run on Ryobi 40V batteries or on Makita 40V XGT batteries without an adapter. FAQ

Will a FlexVolt battery charge on my regular 20V MAX charger?

Yes. DeWalt states that FlexVolt packs are compatible with 20V MAX chargers, so the charger you already own for your drill batteries handles the FlexVolt pack too.

Does the horn use the 2Ah or the 6Ah rating of a DCB606?

The 6Ah rating. The 2Ah figure only applies when the pack is running in 60V series mode on a 60V MAX tool. On a 20V MAX device like a train horn, the pack runs in parallel mode at its full 20V capacity.

Will a FlexVolt pack drain faster on the horn than a regular pack?

No. The horn draws the same current regardless of pack, and the FlexVolt pack has more of it to give. A 9Ah FlexVolt lasts roughly four and a half times as long between charges as a 2Ah compact pack on the same horn.

Is there a train horn with a native 60V MAX mount?

Not that we are aware of, and there is no reason to build one. A 60V pack would give the compressor triple the voltage it was designed for, so a horn would need a completely different motor. The 20V MAX mount already delivers 130 to 150+ dB, and FlexVolt runs it natively.
