The XGT® platform from Makita® has grown past 125 tools, so plenty of garages now have a 40V max pack sitting on the charger — and a fair question follows: will a battery-powered train horn run on one? The short answer is no, not directly. Here's exactly why XGT and 18V never cross, what the adapters on the market actually do, and the path that gets an XGT owner a 130–150+ dB horn without fighting the platform.
The short answer: no train horn takes an XGT® pack
Battery train horns — ours and every credible one we've seen — are built around handheld power-tool packs in the 18–24V class: Milwaukee® M18™, DeWalt® 20V MAX™, Makita® 18V LXT®, and their competitors. The XGT line sits outside that class entirely, for two hard reasons:
- It won't physically connect. XGT and LXT packs are both slide-style, but the rails, keying, and contact layout are different by design. Makita built XGT as a separate system with zero battery compatibility with its 18V line — an XGT pack does not mount on any LXT tool interface, including the LXT-style mount a Makita-compatible horn uses.
- The voltage is double. A "40V max" XGT pack is a 36V-nominal battery — ten lithium-ion cells in series — that reads about 40 volts fresh off the charger. A horn's compressor motor, remote receiver, and switching electronics are engineered for 18V-class power. Feeding them twice the design voltage isn't a gray area; it's how you burn out a motor and cook a receiver board.
So if you were hoping to click a 40V mower-and-saw pack straight into a horn: it won't fit, and you wouldn't want it to.
XGT® vs 18V LXT®: one brand, two walled-off platforms
Makita runs two separate battery families and keeps a clean wall between them — unlike DeWalt®, whose FlexVolt™ packs step down to run 20V MAX™ tools, there is no backward compatibility here in either direction. Here's how the two platforms compare on paper:

LXT is the world's largest compatible 18V slide-style battery system, which is exactly why horn makers build for it. XGT is aimed at high-demand gear — big saws, rotary hammers, outdoor equipment — where 36 volts earns its keep. A train horn compressor doesn't need that; it needs the 18V class it was designed around.
The adapter reality: what exists, and what it actually does
Type "XGT to LXT adapter" into a search bar and you'll get hits, so let's sort them honestly.
The official adapter is for charging only. Makita's ADP10 lets you charge 18V LXT batteries on a 40V max XGT rapid charger — an 18V 6.0Ah pack in about 40 minutes. That's the entire job. It does not let an XGT battery power an 18V tool, and it does not let an LXT battery power an XGT tool. Makita offers no adapter, in either direction, for running tools across platforms.
Third-party step-down adapters exist — with real caveats. Aftermarket adapters that mount an XGT pack on top and present an LXT-style foot underneath are sold in the $35–40 range. The competent ones contain an actual DC-DC converter that steps 36–40V down to 18V-class output; one widely sold unit is rated 60A continuous at 18V, which is more than enough headroom for a horn compressor. But go in with eyes open:
- Not all units convert voltage. A bare pass-through adapter would deliver 36–40V straight into 18V electronics and destroy them. If a listing doesn't explicitly state a built-in DC-DC converter with 18V output, treat it as a pass-through and walk away.
- They're power-only. These adapters can't be used for charging, and the makers warn against ever connecting one to a charger.
- Extra bulk, extra failure point. You're stacking a heavy 36V pack plus a converter box onto a handheld horn — more weight, more connections, one more thing between the trigger and the blast.
- The math barely works. The adapter costs about as much as a basic 18V-class battery. At that point you're spending adapter money to avoid battery money.
Bottom line: a converter-type adapter can technically run an LXT-compatible horn from an XGT pack, but we design and test our horns on native 18V-class batteries, and that's the setup we recommend.
The path that works: an LXT®-compatible horn
If you're on XGT, odds are good you're a Makita shop overall — and many XGT owners still have LXT packs from years of 18V tools. Own zero 18V packs? The numbers still favor going native
Maybe you went all-in on XGT and never owned an LXT battery. You still don't need the adapter route. We stock an 18V LXT-compatible battery and a matching charger as add-ons, so the horn arrives as a complete, self-contained kit. Compare the two paths:

Can I run a train horn on an XGT® battery with a step-down adapter?
Only with an adapter that contains a genuine DC-DC converter outputting 18V-class power — never a bare pass-through, which would feed 36–40V into 18V electronics and destroy them. It can work, but we test and support our horns on native 18V-class packs, and that's the configuration we stand behind.
Does the ADP10 let me power tools across platforms?
No. The ADP10 is a charging accessory: it lets 18V LXT® batteries charge on a 40V max XGT® charger. It never powers a tool or a horn from either battery type.
Wouldn't a 36V pack make the horn louder?
No — loudness comes from compressor pressure and trumpet design, not from feeding the motor more voltage. The Extreme Series hits 150+ dB on a standard 18V-class pack because the compressor and trumpets are engineered for exactly that supply. Overvolting wouldn't make it louder; it would make it dead.
Will there be an XGT-compatible train horn?
We haven't seen one from anyone, and we don't currently build one. The 18V class is where the batteries are cheapest, most common, and more than powerful enough for a horn compressor, so that's where horn development stays focused.
Does battery size matter for an LXT®-compatible horn?
Any capacity works — compact 2Ah packs keep the horn light, while bigger packs simply deliver more blasts between charges. Voltage, not amp-hours, is what determines compatibility.
