Your mower, string trimmer, and blower all run on Ryobi® 40V packs, so it's a fair question: can a battery-powered train horn run on one too? The short answer is no — and the workaround you might be picturing, an adapter that steps 40V down to 18V, is a project with real downsides. Here's exactly why the 40V platform doesn't cross over, and the path that gets you a 130–150+ dB blast using batteries you can pick up anywhere.
The short answer: no train horn takes a Ryobi® 40V pack
Battery train horns are built around handheld power-tool packs in the 18–24V class — Milwaukee® M18™, DeWalt® 20V MAX™, Ryobi® 18V ONE+™, and their competitors. Ryobi's 40V line is a different animal entirely. It's the company's dedicated outdoor-power platform — mowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, snow blowers, more than 85 tools in all — built around a higher-voltage slide-on pack that has nothing in common with the ONE+ mount.
We don't make a 40V-compatible horn, and we haven't seen a credible one from anyone else. There are two hard reasons:
- It won't physically connect. A 40V pack slides onto a rail with its contacts on the surface. An 18V ONE+ pack works the opposite way — a stem-style post that inserts up into the base of the tool. The two interfaces don't touch each other's contacts at any angle.
- The voltage is roughly double. A "40V" pack measures about 42 volts fresh off the charger and averages about 36 volts over its discharge. A horn built for 18V-class packs is engineered for half that.
Ryobi® 40V vs 18V ONE+™: two platforms that don't cross
Ryobi runs two separate battery families, and the company keeps a clean wall between them. The only official crossover product is a dual-platform charger that can charge both an 18V ONE+ pack and a 40V pack — convenient if you own both, but it doesn't make the batteries interchangeable in any tool. Can you step a 40V pack down to run a train horn? You can try — you shouldn't
There is no official adapter in either direction. Ryobi doesn't make cross-voltage adapters and doesn't condone third-party ones, and its warranty language specifically excludes damage resulting from "alteration" or "modification." Bolt on a homemade adapter, and both the pack and whatever it's feeding are on your dime.
It's worth noticing which direction the DIY market actually flows. The homemade adapters you'll find on craft marketplaces mostly go up, not down: they wire two 18V packs in series to make roughly 36 volts and feed 40V lawn tools. Stepping a 40V pack down to run 18V gear is the harder, rarer build — you'd need a DC-DC buck converter sized for the horn's peak current draw, correct fusing, and a weatherproof enclosure, and a mistake on any of those cooks something expensive.
And if you skip the converter and wire 36–40 volts straight into an 18V device? Electronics engineered for 18 volts overheat fast when fed double — enough heat, in a worst case, to melt internal components outright. On a battery train horn, the parts taking that hit are the diaphragm driver and the wireless remote receiver board. Overvolting a horn doesn't make it louder, either: the driver is tuned to hit its rated decibel output at its rated voltage. Push past that and you get a hot coil and a dead horn, not extra sound.
Cross-brand adapters within the same 18–20V class are a different, milder question — those at least match voltage. Cross-voltage adapters are the hard no.

Will a Ryobi® 40V battery physically fit a battery train horn?
