Losing the remote for your train horn feels like losing the horn itself — the compressor, trumpets, and battery are all fine, but nothing fires. First, Make Sure the Remote Is Actually the Problem
If the fob is gone — dropped on a trail, went through the wash, riding around in someone else's jacket — skip to the next section. But if you still have the remote and it just stopped working, don't order anything yet. Most "dead" fobs are really dead fob batteries. Not every 433 MHz fob on the internet will talk to your horn. The remote and receiver have to speak the same encoding, and there are two big families. Most train horn remotes — along with garage remotes, gate openers, and alarm fobs — are fixed-code transmitters built on encoder chips like the EV1527 family: the fob broadcasts one unchanging ID, and the receiver simply memorizes it. Rolling-code remotes (common on newer garage door openers and car fobs) change their code on every press, and a fixed-code learning receiver can't store them. That's the number-one reason a random replacement fob refuses to pair.

Pairing the New Remote: Step by Step
The exact button dance varies slightly between receiver boards, so keep the sheet that comes with your horn — but on 433 MHz learning receivers the pattern is nearly universal:
- 1. Power everything. Clip a charged tool battery into the horn and put a fresh 23A/27A battery in the new fob. A surprising share of pairing failures trace back to a fob with a stale battery straight out of the package.
- 2. Find the learn button. Open the horn's control box and look for a small button (sometimes labeled LEARN or CODE) next to an LED on the receiver board.
- 3. Enter learn mode. Press the learn button — on many boards it's one or two quick taps — until the LED starts flashing. The receiver is now listening for a new transmitter ID.
- 4. Send the code. Within a few seconds, press the fire button on the new remote once. The LED flashes again to confirm the ID is stored.
- 5. Test it. Fire the horn from a few feet away, then from across the driveway. Done — the receiver now answers your new fob.

Lost the Old Remote? Wipe the Receiver's Memory First
Here's the step most people skip. The receiver keeps obeying every fob it has ever learned — including the one you lost. If that remote is floating around a campground or a buddy's truck, whoever finds it can set off a 130–150 dB horn parked in your driveway. Before you pair the replacement, clear the old code out.
On common 433 MHz learning receivers, the wipe is a repeated press of the same learn button — pressing it eight times in a row is a typical factory sequence, and the LED flashes several times to confirm the memory is erased. The exact count varies by board, so check the instruction sheet for your horn; the tell is always the same long LED flash pattern. Two Remotes, One Horn — and One Remote, Two Horns
Learning receivers can store more than one transmitter ID, which opens up a couple of genuinely useful setups:

Will a garage door or car remote work with my train horn?

Do I need to re-pair after changing the fob's battery?
