Walk through any train horn catalog and you'll see the pattern: dual, quad, and then the big one — five trumpets fanned out like organ pipes. The natural assumption is that each extra trumpet stacks on more volume, so five must beat four. The real answer is more interesting, and it changes which horn you should actually buy.
The Short Answer: A Fifth Trumpet Adds a Note, Not Much Volume
Trumpet count and loudness are two different levers. Loudness is set by how much air the horn moves and how hard it moves it — pump output, pressure, and bell size. Trumpet count sets how many pitches sound at once. A fifth trumpet mostly buys you a fuller chord, not a bigger number on the decibel meter.
The acoustics back this up. Doubling the number of identical, independent sound sources raises the total sound pressure level by about 3 dB — that's the standard rule for incoherent sources. Going from four trumpets to five isn't even a doubling: run the math (10 × log10 of 5/4) and you get roughly 1 dB from the extra source alone. Outdoors, over engine noise and wind, a 1 dB change is close to imperceptible.
There's a second catch. On a battery horn, one pump feeds every trumpet. Split the same airflow across five bells instead of four and each bell gets slightly less air. That's why a 5-trumpet horn is only louder than a quad when the whole system behind it — pump, air delivery, bell size — is built to push more air, not simply because a fifth bell was bolted on.
Why 5-Trumpet Horns Exist: The Real-Locomotive Chord
If the fifth trumpet doesn't add real volume, why do railroads and horn builders bother? The answer is the chord. Under federal rule 49 CFR 229.129, a real locomotive horn has to produce between 96 and 110 dB(A) measured 100 feet in front of the locomotive — the loudness window is fixed by regulation. So locomotive horns aren't differentiated by loudness at all. They're differentiated by how many chimes (trumpets) play together.
A three-chime Nathan AirChime K3LA plays three notes: D#, F#, and B. The five-chime K5LA plays a five-note B major sixth chord — D#, F#, G#, B, and a higher D#. Same regulated loudness window, completely different voice: the five-chime version is the big, layered, unmistakably-a-train sound you hear at American crossings.

Is a 5-trumpet train horn louder than a quad?
Not automatically. Adding a fifth identical trumpet to the same air supply adds only about 1 dB on paper, and in practice the pump's airflow gets split one more way.
