PWR CORE 12, 20, and 40 Are Three Different Systems
Skil® runs three separate cordless systems, and batteries do not cross between them. PWR CORE 12™ packs fit only 12V tools, PWR CORE 20™ packs fit only 20V tools, and the PWR CORE 40™ outdoor line is its own platform again — the mounts and connectors are physically different. The horn is built for the PWR CORE 20™ slide interface only. If your packs came with a 12V screwdriver or a 40V mower, they will not seat on the horn’s mount.
One label worth decoding while we are here: “20V” on a tool battery is an 18V-class rating. The lithium-ion cells inside carry a nominal 3.6 volts each — 18 volts for a five-cell pack — and only rest near 4 volts per cell fresh off the charger with no load applied, which is where the “20V” figure comes from. Third-party PWR CORE 20™-compatible packs push capacity further — the horn accepts packs from 2.0Ah up to 12.0Ah as long as they use the standard Skil® 20V slide interface.
A bit of corporate history explains one common mix-up. Skil® spent decades as a Bosch-family brand, but Chervon acquired it in a deal completed in 2017 and relaunched the cordless line the following year. So despite the shared past, Bosch® 18V packs and Skil® PWR CORE 20™ packs are completely different platforms — different rails, different contacts, no cross-fit in either direction.
The Adapter Route: Mixing Battery Brands
Skil® owners cross-shop adapters constantly, and the market has responded: dedicated adapters that let DeWalt® 20V MAX™ or Milwaukee® M18™ packs run Skil® 20V tools are sold by multiple makers. They work in the other direction too — adapters exist to put Skil® packs on other brands’ mounts. Three caveats apply to all of them: you can never charge a battery through an adapter, the stacked interface adds height and a bit of wobble, and adapter makers themselves exclude some high-draw tools from their compatibility lists.
For a train horn, though, the adapter math rarely favors the workaround. A horn version already exists with a native mount for every major battery platform — so the cleaner move is to buy the horn that matches the packs you own most of, and skip the extra part that can walk off or work loose. Loudness: Where the Skil-Compatible Model Sits
Battery train horns sort into three loudness tiers: dual-trumpet models around 130 dB, quad-trumpet models around 140 dB, and the Extreme and Boss Series builds at 150 dB and up. The Skil-compatible model sits in the quad tier. Its four trumpets are cut to different lengths so each sounds a different note, which produces the discordant, multi-pitch locomotive chord instead of a single flat honk. Treat the smaller-pack numbers as estimates scaled from the 6Ah figure — cold weather, pack age, and long continuous blasts pull them down. The practical read: the 2.0Ah pack that came with your drill covers months of normal use, and a 4.0Ah or 5.0Ah pack turns the horn into something you charge a few times a season. That margin matters most away from shore power — on a boat, at a hunting camp, or on the back forty — where the horn may sit for weeks and still needs to sound on the first press.

Will my Skil® PWR CORE 12™ batteries work?
No. The 12V line uses a different mount and connector, and Skil® batteries only work within their own voltage system. The horn needs a PWR CORE 20™ slide pack — first-party or compatible aftermarket.
Skil® used to be a Bosch brand — will Bosch® 18V packs fit?
No. Chervon has owned Skil® since 2017, and the PWR CORE 20™ interface shares nothing with the Bosch® 18V mount. If your packs are Bosch®, the Quad Train Horn for Bosch® 18v battery is the version to get instead.
Do I need a special charger?
No. The horn draws from the pack exactly like a tool does, so your existing Skil® charger handles everything. If you want a dedicated spare to live with the horn, a PWR CORE-compatible charger and a PWR CORE-compatible battery are available as add-ons.
Can I run the horn on DeWalt® or Milwaukee® packs with an adapter?
Cross-brand adapters targeting the Skil® 20V interface exist and pass power fine for most loads.
