Why One Trumpet Sounds Like a Truck
Look at what the trucking world actually bolts to a cab roof. Wolo's public spec sheet lists its Model 820 Giant low-tone roof horn at 130 decibels and 285 Hz, and the matching Model 825 at 130 decibels and 330 Hz. Both are single trumpets playing a single note. Wolo even recommends installing them as a pair, one high tone and one low tone, because a lone note sounds thin. That single, steady pitch somewhere in the 280 to 330 Hz range is the sound every driver in America has learned to associate with an 18-wheeler.
Boats reinforce the same lesson. The U.S. Coast Guard's technical rules for sound signal appliances, published in 33 CFR Part 86, require a vessel whistle to have one fundamental frequency between 70 and 700 Hz, with boats under 75 meters landing in the 250 to 700 Hz band. You need roughly a 10 dB increase before a listener judges a sound as twice as loud.
