Makita Train Horn — Portable Power, Maximum Sound

If you already run Makita® 18V LXT® tools on the job or around the property, adding a train horn drill to your lineup is a natural fit. Our cordless train horns are independently designed and assembled to accept the same 18V LXT® battery pack you already own. No new charging infrastructure, no adapters, no guesswork — just slot in a pack and put serious sound to work.

Why a Makita® 18V LXT®-Compatible Train Horn?

The Makita® 18V LXT® platform is one of the most established cordless systems in the United States. It has been in continuous development for well over a decade, which means there is a wide range of battery capacities available — from compact packs suited for light tasks to high-output packs built for sustained heavy use. That maturity matters when you are choosing a compatible accessory like a train horn drill.

Because the LXT® system is so widely adopted, many households and job sites already have at least one 18V LXT® pack on hand. That existing ownership lowers the barrier to entry significantly: you may already have everything you need to run one of our horns the moment it arrives.

The slide-in battery interface used by the LXT® platform is straightforward and reliable. Our horns are built to the same slot-in form factor, so installation is tool-free and takes seconds. Whether you need a horn for a work truck, an ATV, a farm vehicle, a boat dock, or a safety application, the combination of a field-proven battery system and our rugged horn hardware makes for a dependable, portable setup.

Battery Compatibility & Runtime Guidance

Our horns are compatible with Makita® 18V LXT® battery packs across the full capacity range. Here is a general guide to help you choose the right pack size for your intended use.

  • 1.5–2 Ah (Compact packs): Best for occasional, short-duration blasts — think driveway alerts, brief signaling, or light recreational use. Lightweight and easy to carry, but capacity is limited for sustained or frequent activation.
  • 3–5 Ah (Mid-range packs): The sweet spot for most users. Suitable for job-site safety signaling, sporting events, tailgating, and general everyday use. Provides a comfortable balance between weight and runtime.
  • 6–9 Ah (High-capacity packs): Recommended for extended sessions or high-frequency activations — parades, extended outdoor events, farm and agricultural signaling, or any situation where you expect continuous use over a longer period.
  • 10+ Ah (Maximum-capacity packs): Built for demanding, all-day applications. If you need the horn running heavily throughout a full workday or event, these packs offer the longest runtime between charges and pair well with our loudest tiers.

As a general rule, match pack capacity to how often and how long you expect to sound the horn. A larger Ah pack does not make the horn louder — it simply gives you more activations before needing a recharge.

Pick Your Loudness Tier

Dual Trumpets — 130 dB: A strong, attention-getting horn ideal for driveways, smaller vehicles, and recreational use where you want to be heard without overwhelming a confined space. Shop Dual Trumpets.

Quad Trumpets — 140 dB: A significant step up in projection and authority, well suited for job sites, trucks, boats, and outdoor events where you need sound to carry across distance. Shop Quad Trumpets.

Extreme Series — 150 dB: Designed for serious safety and signaling applications — agricultural operations, large outdoor worksites, and anywhere ambient noise is high and range matters. Shop Extreme Series.

Boss Series — 150+ dB: Our top-of-the-line platform, built for users who need maximum sound output and the most robust hardware we offer. Pair with a high-capacity LXT® pack for best results. Shop Boss Series.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Makita® 18V LXT® starter kit battery work with your horn?

Yes. Starter kit batteries are typically in the 1.5–3 Ah range and will power our horns without issue. They are best suited for light or occasional use. If you plan to activate the horn frequently during a single outing, consider using a higher-capacity pack from your existing LXT® collection for longer runtime between charges.

Will it work with older or newer generation LXT® packs?

Our horns are built to accept the standard Makita® 18V LXT® battery form factor. Both older and current-generation LXT® packs that share that same slide-in interface are compatible. If you are unsure about a specific pack's physical interface, check that it is the standard 18V LXT® form factor before purchasing.

Can I use a third-party Makita® 18V LXT®-compatible battery?

Third-party batteries built to the 18V LXT® form factor will generally seat and power the horn. However, we cannot guarantee performance, safety, or runtime with non-genuine packs, and any issues arising from third-party batteries fall outside our coverage. We recommend using genuine Makita® 18V LXT® packs for the most reliable experience.

Will sounding the horn drain my battery quickly?

Train horns draw a meaningful burst of current during each activation. Occasional short blasts consume relatively little charge. Sustained or very frequent use will draw down the pack faster. Higher Ah packs handle extended sessions more comfortably. Think of horn use similarly to how you would think about running a mid-to-high-draw power tool — pack size should reflect your intended usage pattern.

Is the battery included with the horn?

No. Our train horn drills are sold as tool-only units, without a battery or charger. This keeps the price fair for the many customers who already own Makita® 18V LXT® packs. If you need a battery and charger, they are widely available through Makita® authorized retailers.

Do I need any special adapter or wiring to use an LXT® pack?

No adapters or additional wiring are required. Our horns are built with the standard 18V LXT® slide-in interface, so installation is a direct slot-in connection — the same way you would attach a pack to any LXT® tool. The whole process takes only a few seconds.

Which horn tier should I pair with a compact 1.5–2 Ah pack?

Any of our horn tiers will operate on a compact pack. For light or infrequent use, even our louder tiers work fine on a smaller pack. If you plan to run the Extreme or Boss Series heavily, we suggest pairing those with a 3 Ah or larger pack to ensure you get enough activations per charge to make the outing worthwhile.
