The Bosch® 18V Lithium-Ion platform is one of the most widely adopted cordless tool systems in the United States. Homeowners, contractors, and hobbyists have been building out their 18V collections for years, which means there's a good chance you already have a compatible pack sitting on a shelf or charging in your garage.

That matters for a train horn because portability only works if you're not hunting down a new charger or buying into a battery ecosystem from scratch. Bosch® 18V packs are easy to source, available in a wide range of capacities, and backed by a mature charging infrastructure. Swapping a pack in and out takes seconds.

The 18V nominal voltage also sits in a practical sweet spot for our horn motor and solenoid design. It delivers enough sustained current to trigger the air compressor reliably without the bulk of higher-voltage industrial platforms. Whether you're using a compact pack for light use or a high-capacity pack for extended sessions, the Bosch® 18V system scales cleanly across all our loudness tiers.

Battery compatibility & runtime guidance

Our horns work with Bosch® 18V Lithium-Ion batteries across a range of capacities. Here's how to think about Ah tiers and what each is generally suited for:

• 1.5–2 Ah (Compact packs): Lightweight and easy to carry. Fine for occasional blasts — think a few short activations at a tailgate or a quick trail signal. Not ideal for sustained or repeated use over a long session.
• 3–5 Ah (Mid-range packs): The most common category for everyday use. Good balance of weight and capacity. Handles moderate use at events, job sites, or recreational outings without constant recharging.
• 6–9 Ah (High-capacity packs): Best for extended or frequent activation. If you're running a horn at a long event or using it repeatedly over several hours, a higher-Ah pack reduces interruptions and maintains consistent trigger response.
• 10+ Ah (High-output packs): Maximum runtime and the most current headroom. Overkill for casual use, but the right call if you're pushing the Extreme or Boss Series hard and want the compressor performing at its peak for as long as possible.

No battery is included with any of our horns. You supply the Bosch® 18V pack you already own or prefer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a standard Bosch® 18V starter kit battery work with these horns?

Yes. If the pack is an 18V Lithium-Ion battery from the Bosch® 18V platform, it will physically and electrically connect with our horn drill. Starter kit packs are typically on the lower end of the Ah range, so expect lighter use before needing a recharge. For occasional activations that's completely fine.

Will it work with older or newer generation Bosch® 18V packs?

Our horns are designed for broad compatibility across the Bosch® 18V Lithium-Ion line. We don't engineer around a single generation. That said, if you have an unusually old pack with degraded cells, runtime and trigger response will reflect the condition of that battery, not our product's design.

Can I use a third-party Bosch® 18V-compatible battery?

Third-party packs built to the Bosch® 18V form factor will generally fit our horns. We can't vouch for the quality or cell consistency of aftermarket batteries, and runtime or reliability may vary. If you already own name-brand Bosch® 18V packs, those are your most predictable option.

Will running the horn drain my battery quickly?

It depends on how you use it. A train horn draws a meaningful burst of current each time the compressor fires. Short, infrequent activations are easy on any pack. Long or rapid repeated blasts — especially on the Extreme or Boss Series — will draw the pack down faster. A higher-Ah battery extends your session without any other changes.

Is the battery included with the horn?

No. Our train horn drills are sold as tool-only units. You supply the Bosch® 18V Lithium-Ion battery. This keeps the price straightforward and lets you use the packs you already own rather than paying for a duplicate you don't need.

Does the voltage have to be exactly 18V?

Yes. Our horns are built for 18V nominal input. Do not attempt to use packs from other voltage classes — higher voltage can damage the horn's electronics, and lower voltage will not deliver sufficient power to the compressor.

Which horn tier pairs best with a mid-range Bosch® 18V pack?

A 3–5 Ah Bosch® 18V pack is a comfortable match for any of our tiers in typical use. For the Dual or Quad, it's more than enough. For the Extreme or Boss Series, it handles moderate sessions well. If you're planning extended or repeated use at the top tiers, moving up to a 6 Ah or larger pack is worth considering.
