Loudness: Reading the Numbers Honestly
Decibel ratings only mean something with a distance attached. Stebel is unusually transparent here: 139 dB at 4 inches becomes 115 dB at 2 meters. That 24 dB drop is what physics predicts. The Federal Highway Administration's noise fundamentals guidance states that sound from a point source falls 6 dBA for each doubling of distance, and that a 10 dB change is perceived as a doubling or halving of the sound.
