Why a Dirty Horn Loses Its Voice
A trumpet is a megaphone. Anything sitting in the bell or the throat — mud, leaves, a wasp nest, packed road grime — changes how air leaves the horn, and the sound goes flat before it goes silent. Step 1: Clean the Trumpets — Bugs, Grime, and Whatever Crawled In
If your horn's trumpets unbolt from the body, pull them off and wash them at a sink or bench — it's faster and keeps water away from the electronics. If not, clean them in place with the battery removed.

For dried-on bug strikes, don't dry-scrub. Soak a cloth in the warm soapy water, lay it over the splatter, and give it one to five minutes to soften the residue. Then wipe in light circular passes — dried bug shell is gritty, and grinding it across a painted bell leaves swirl scratches. Repeat the soak on stubborn spots instead of pressing harder.
For the inside, run a soft bottle brush down each trumpet throat to knock out dust, mud, and insect debris, then rinse with the bell facing down so dirty water drains out instead of running back toward the horn body. Never poke a screwdriver or wire into the narrow end of a trumpet — the seat where the trumpet meets the horn is what shapes the sound, and gouging it does permanent damage.
While everything is wet, look at the finish. Surface film wipes off; white oxidation, pitting, or rust bloom does not — that's a corrosion problem, not a cleaning problem, and it's worth catching early. Step 2: The Housing, Battery Contacts, and Remote
Pull the battery off before you touch the horn body with anything damp. The housing holds the motor, valve, and remote receiver, so it gets a wrung-out damp cloth with a drop of dish soap — never a hose, never a dunk. Work around vents and seams instead of pushing water into them.

Battery contacts want a different treatment. The remote just needs a wipe with the damp cloth. Don't soak it, and don't spray cleaner directly into the buttons.

Here's the counterintuitive part: a train horn is not a squeaky hinge. Most of it should never see lubricant at all.
- The diaphragm. Marine horn manufacturers state it plainly in their installation sheets: do not lubricate the diaphragm or the internal cavity — moving air doesn't need it. If you ever open a serviceable horn and find dirt or oil on the diaphragm, the instruction is a soft, dry cloth. Nothing else.
- Rubber gaskets and O-rings. WD-40 is roughly half mineral spirits, and petroleum solvents attack synthetic rubber — seals exposed to them swell, soften, and degrade, which means they stop sealing. That applies to natural rubber, silicone, and EPDM alike.
- Battery contact blades. Grease on contacts collects grit and builds resistance. Clean metal conducts better than coated metal.

FAQ
Can I spray WD-40 into my train horn to fix a weak sound?
No. A weak horn is almost always a dirty, obstructed, or worn horn — not a dry one. WD-40 is about half mineral spirits, and petroleum solvents swell and degrade the rubber parts a horn depends on. Clean it instead, and if the sound doesn't come back, look at the diaphragm and air path.
Can I use a pressure washer on the trumpets?
