Search "M18 battery" or "20V battery" on any big marketplace and half the results aren’t Milwaukee or DeWalt at all — they’re $25–$40 lookalike packs promising 6Ah, 9Ah, even 12Ah. Will one of those run a battery train horn? Usually, yes. Should it? That depends on which kind of "aftermarket" you’re actually holding.

The Short Answer: It Clicks In, It Honks

A battery train horn is a simple, honest load: a 12V-class compressor motor, a solenoid valve, and a remote receiver, all fed from the tool-battery rail. It doesn’t handshake with proprietary battery chips the way some newer smart tools do. If the pack physically fits the M18-style or 20V MAX-style rail and delivers its rated voltage under load, the horn will build pressure and blow. That’s why competitor listings can honestly say "works with aftermarket batteries" — almost anything that slides on will make noise.

Both platforms are electrically the same idea: five lithium-ion cells in series at 3.6 volts nominal each, which is 18 volts nominal. "20V MAX" is the same chemistry measured fresh off the charger before it settles. So loudness doesn’t change between a genuine pack and a clone — voltage sets the compressor’s output, and both claim the same voltage. So the question was never "will it work today?" It’s "what did you actually pay for, and what’s sitting inside that plastic shell on your charger tonight?"

"Aftermarket" and "Counterfeit" Are Two Different Products

Lumping every non-OEM pack together is where buyers go wrong. There are two very different things sold under the aftermarket label:

  • Legitimate third-party packs. A real company with its own brand name on the shell, an honest capacity label, a functioning battery management system (BMS), and a safety listing from a recognized lab that you can actually verify. These exist, and good ones deliver most of what an OEM pack does for less money.
  • Knockoffs and counterfeits. Anonymous or OEM-lookalike shells, inflated capacity stickers, bottom-bin cells, and — per the Power Tool Institute — no certification from any recognized lab, sometimes with forged UL or CSA marks printed on anyway. Some are built from used cells pulled out of old packs, rewrapped, and sold as new; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned specifically about rewrapped loose lithium cells making their way to consumers.

The Printed Ah Is Fiction on Cheap Packs

Capacity is where knockoffs lie the loudest. In one independent capacity test, a knockoff pack labeled 6Ah delivered roughly 2Ah of measured capacity — about a third of the sticker. Voltage Sag: The Part You’ll Actually Hear

Even when a cheap pack doesn’t fail, it can make a strong horn sound cheap. A horn compressor pulls a hard burst of current at startup, and low-grade cells with high internal resistance sag under that load — voltage drops, the motor spins slower, pressure builds late, and the blast comes on soft and flat instead of hitting instantly. Red flags that mark a pack as a knockoff rather than a legitimate third-party battery:

  • Price that breaks physics. Good lithium cells cost real money. A "9Ah" pack for $30 cannot contain $60 worth of cells. If the deal looks too good to be true, it is.
  • No brand, or a borrowed look. Anonymous shells, or shells molded and colored to pass for Milwaukee or DeWalt at a glance.
  • Capacity claims above the platform’s own flagship. When a no-name pack claims more Ah than the toolmaker’s biggest battery at a tenth of the price, the sticker is doing the lying.
  • Certification marks you can’t verify. A printed logo isn’t a listing. Real listings are searchable in the certifier’s online database.
  • Seller pages with recycled photos and thin reviews. Read the one-star reviews first — that’s where the swelling-and-smoking reports live.

Will an aftermarket battery damage the horn itself?

Almost never. The horn is a motor-and-valve load with no delicate electronics exposed to the pack; the risk lives in the battery and its charger, not the horn. The worst the horn sees is weak, saggy performance. The pack, on the other hand, can over-discharge itself to death in a few sessions if its BMS has no real cutoff.

Do house-brand batteries like Bauer, Hart, or Hercules count as "aftermarket"?
